UEFA Champions League - James Millner Reaction
Liverpool midfielder James Milner reflected on a dissapointing night for the Reds following a 3-0 defeat to Barcelona
Liverpool midfielder James Milner has insisted that it's only the result that matters as the Reds fell to a 3-0 defeat to Barcelona in their semi-final first leg on Wednesday evening.
Liverpool played well for large swathes of the second half, but a late brace from Leo Messi which included a spectacular free-kick which was his 600th goal for Barca put the tie beyond doubt.
"I think at this stage of the competition is the result that matters really. We can take heart that we created chances and were in the game and taken a couple of those but it didn't happen. They are a top team they are gonna get chances and take them. We can be proud of how we played but at this stage of the competition we need to get the result."
Whilst Milner stressed that his side are capable of having a special night at Anfield despite being down 3-0.
"Yeah, that's what he's like you sort of expect those things now. It's tough to take after a pretty positive performance but we have to regroup and take the positive that we have created chances and see what happens at Anfield. It's going to be really, really tough but we'll give it everything and we know special things have happened at Anfield before."
Liverpool will have to go for it at home next week if they are to have any chance of progressing to the final. For now, Liverpool will turn their attention to Newcastle as they battle it out for the Premier League title with Manchester City.
"Yeah, it's an uphill battle but we did create chances. The only thing is that we have to be careful to leave the door open at the other end and give them another goal because that will be difficult. We've got to bounce back for the weekend and pick ourselves up from this disappointment we've all seen the heart and drive and the team spirit in the dressing and we'll be sure to be ready to go at the weekend. Hopefully, we can get a result there and get a bit of posative feeling going into the next leg."
