Sixth time a charm for Federer?
Will it be a sixth Australian Open for Federer by the end of the day? The Swiss superstar won last years tournament and will be looking to win back to back Australian Open wins since 2006 & 2007. Road to the final
For both finalists, they endured tough runs to the final, although retiring players did help their quest to progress. Cilic needed to win two tiebreaks to get the better of Pablo Carreno Busta 6–7(2–7), 6–3, 7–6(7–0), 7–6(7–3). Whilst in the quarterfinals Cilic battled to five sets with number one seed Rafa Nadal before the Spaniard retired. Heading to the Semi-finals and the Croatian got the better of surprise package Kyle Edmund 6–2, 7–6(7–4), 6–2 to book his place in his third Grand Slam final.
As for Federer, straight sets victories over Richard Gasquet, Márton Fucsovics & Tomáš Berdych saw the Fed-express roll into the semi-finals with relative ease. Up next was South Korean youngster Chung Hyeon who had knocked out Novak Djokovic on route to his first ever semi-final. Predictably Federer dominated the early sets 6–1, 5–2, before Hyeon retired with blisters.
