Vinci survives scare as Lisicki gets revenge on Arruabarrena
Roberta Vinci survived a scare against qualifier Barbora Krejcikova in the first round of the Nurnberger Versicherungscup.
Top seed Roberta Vinci twice came from a break down in the third set to progress to the second round of the Nurnberger Versicherungscup with a win over qualifier Barbora Krejcikova.
Having surged to the first set, a poor performance in the second forced the Italian into a decider that featured breaks of serve in the opening four games.
But Vinci finally struck the key blow in the sixth game of the third before serving the match out to love after two hours and four minutes.
Fifth seed Sabine Lisicki is also through following a straightforward 6-3 6-4 win over Lara Arruabarrena, who defeated the German in last year's event.
"I was ready for a tough match - I lost to Lara 7-6 in the third last year at this same tournament," Lisicki said.
"I'm very happy to be able to get my revenge this time. It's always nice to play at home and it's a nice feeling to get the support. Hopefully I'll be able to stay as long as possible."
Second seed Laura Siegemund needed only 54 minutes to see off Marina Melnikova, while third seed Annika Beck beat Nicole Gibbs in a second-round meeting.
The day's other two second-round clashes saw Anna-Lena Friedsam got the better of Christina McHale and Lesia Tsurenko overcome Polona Hercog in three sets, the fourth seed winning in two hours and 22 minutes.
Elsewhere in the draw there were wins for Julia Goerges and Misaki Doi.
