Verdasco ends trophy drought in Bucharest
Two years since his last ATP title, Fernando Verdasco is a winner again after defeating Lucas Pouille in Bucharest.
Fernando Verdasco ended a two-year wait for an ATP World Tour title as he outclassed Lucas Pouille in straight sets, earning a 6-3 6-2 victory to win the ATP Nastase Tiriac Trophy on Monday.
Heavy rain in Bucharest meant that Sunday's final had to be rescheduled for the following day, but it was worth the wait for the experienced Spaniard, who last won an ATP title in April 2014 in Houston.
Verdasco proved the more clinical on the clay, taking three of the six break-point opportunities that fell his way. The world number 60 needed just one break, which arrived in the fourth game, to take the first set.
By contrast Pouille - playing in his first tour-level final - failed to convert any of his five break-point chances in the match, with four of those coming in the first.
It was one way traffic in the second as Verdasco surged into a 4-1 lead that he never looked like surrendering, ending his long trophy drought in straightforward fashion.
