Sharapova targets morale-boosting end to 2015
After three months plagued by injury, Maria Sharapova hopes to mark her return to the court with victory at the WTA Finals.
Maria Sharapova is motivated to finish an injury-plagued season on a high with a solid performance at the WTA Finals in Singapore.
The five-time grand slam winner has only played once on tour since her Wimbledon semi-final defeat to Serena Williams due to a number of injuries.
Her US Open chances were ruined by a leg strain, which prompted her withdrawal on the eve of the tournament, and her comeback in Wuhan last month was curtailed in the first round due to an arm injury.
Since that match against Barbora Strycova, Sharapova - who sealed her Finals place in September - has not featured at all to aid her recovery and now she hopes to come back and finish 2015 with a second Finals title.
"It was definitely tough not being part of so many tournaments the last few months," she said.
"That is the case this year for me so it was great to have qualified early on so I could give my body the chance to recover and try to get as healthy and fit as I could for this event.
"I would definitely like to think that [coming in fresh could be an advantage].
"I know for many girls this is the last event and everyone goes on holiday, but I am motivated to finish strong here and then go on to Fed Cup finals."
