Radwanska rallies to Beijing win, Bouchard retires
Agnieszka Radwanska was made to work for her place in the third round of the China Open before seeing off Mona Barthel on Monday.
Fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska fought back from a set down to beat Mona Barthel in the second round of the China Open on a day that saw Eugenie Bouchard retire after suffering more symptoms of concussion.
Radwanska, ranked eighth in the world, was beaten by eventual champion Venus Williams in the first round of the Wuhan Open last time out but avoided another early exit in Beijing on Monday.
Pole Radwanska was broken six times, but claimed eight breaks of her own to end the unseeded Barthel's hopes of securing a place in the round three with a 4-6 6-1 6-4 victory.
Barthel was broken three times in the opening set, but responded emphatically in the second before the German world number 53 was edged out in a decider that saw just three games go with serve.
There was more concern for Bouchard after her first match since suffering a bang to the head following a slip in the locker room in the US Open was cut short as she was suffering from dizziness.
The Canadian was reduced to tears after cutting short her first round encounter with Andrea Petkovic when trailing 6-2 1-1.
She later said in a statement: "I thought I was physically ready but unfortunately the symptoms of my concussion came back. I want to thank all my fans at the China Open for their support. I hope to get well soon and look forward to returning next year."
Madison Keys, seeded 14, eventually eased past qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko 3-6 6-1 6-0, and 16th seed Elina Svitolina was beaten in three sets by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
The 11th-seeded Belinda Bencic was given a major first-round test before overcoming Madison Brengle 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 6-3, while Samantha Stosur and Mirjana Lucic-Baroni were also first-round winners.
US Open runner-up Roberta Vinci's impressive form continued as she beat Alison Van Uytvanck in straight sets to reach round three, while Carla Suarez Navarro and Svetlana Kuznetsova also advanced.
