Radwanska eager to build momentum in Nottingham
Agnieszka Radwanska lost in the first round of the French Open, but is the favourite to win the Aegon Open Nottingham this week.
Agnieszka Radwanska plans to put her French Open misery behind her by hitting the ground running on the grass at the inaugural Aegon Open Nottingham this week.
The former world number two was dumped out in the first round by Annika Beck at Roland Garros, losing 6-2 3-6 6-1 to the German in Paris.
Radwanska has been far more at home on grass during her career and the world number 14 views the new tournament at the Nottingham Tennis Centre as a great opportunity to build some momentum with Wimbledon starting at the end of this month.
"I am excited to be making my debut in Nottingham this year and am really looking forward to the event," said the 26-year-old Pole.
"My best results in my career have come on grass in Great Britain and I remember very fondly winning Eastbourne seven years ago and reaching the Wimbledon final in 2012.
"It is very special to be a part of this brand new tournament in its first year and hopefully this will be exactly the preparation I need going into Wimbledon."
American Alison Riske also bowed out in the first round of the French Open at the hands of Sara Errani, but will get an opportunity to put that behind her in Nottingham.
Daniela Hantuchova, a one-time world number five, has also been licking her wounds since falling at the first hurdle against Belinda Bencic in Paris and will aim to make amends this week.
"I am delighted to be playing the Aegon Open Nottingham this year. I am always excited to play new venues and I have heard that the courts are great there," said the world number 59.
"I love playing in Britain, I won in Birmingham in 2013 and the fans showed me great support. Grass is one of my favourite surfaces and the tournaments are a great way to prepare for Wimbledon."
Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, who progressed to the third round of the French Open before losing to Alize Cornet, is also among the contenders to win in Nottingham.
The winner will be presented with the Elena Baltacha Trophy, named in memory of the late former British number one - who won two ITF Circuit career titles at the East Midlands venue.
