Isner shocks Federer as Murray and Djokovic reach Paris quarters
Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are into the Paris Masters quarter-finals, but Roger Federer was a surprise third-round casualty.
Roger Federer saw his hopes of winning a second Paris Masters title dashed in a shock three-set defeat to John Isner, but defending champion Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray booked their spots in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
Third seed Federer, a winner of the Masters event in 2011, came up short in the third-round contest as big-serving American Isner sealed a 7-6 (7-3) 3-6 7-6 (7-5) victory in the French capital.
Swiss Federer had a 5-1 head-to-head record against Isner going into the contest, but the 13th seed matched his opponent all the way and a massive 27 aces gave him plenty of cheap points.
In contrast to Federer's struggles, top seed Djokovic - who is seeking a third straight title in Paris - was a 6-3 7-5 victor over Gilles Simon.
Djokovic, who stretched his winning streak to 19 matches, encountered some trouble along the way - notably in the second set when the opening seven games went against serve.
The Serb failed to serve out the match at 5-4 up, but he quickly rebounded to win the next two games and claim his place in the last eight.
Second seed Murray came up against David Goffin, an opponent he will face when representing Great Britain against Belgium in next month's Davis Cup final, and he claimed a 6-0 6-1 thrashing.
The Briton needed just 53 minutes to secure victory, the only scare he suffered coming when he was accidentally struck by a ball thrown by a ball girl between games.
Next up for Murray is Frenchman Richard Gasquet, who was leading 7-6 (7-3) 4-1 against Kei Nishikori, before his opponent retired hurt with an abdominal injury.
David Ferrer is also into the quarter-finals after coming from behind to defeat Grigor Dimitrov 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 6-4.
