Giorgi claims maiden WTA title at the Topshelf Open
Fifth seed Camila Giorgi claimed her maiden career title at the Topshelf Open with a 7-5 6-3 victory over Belinda Bencic.
Camila Giorgi lifted her first WTA title after three previous final defeats on Sunday as she beat Belinda Bencic in straight sets at the Topshelf Open.
The Italian had too much power and tactical nous for her 18-year-old opponent, claiming a single break in each set to seal the victory 7-5 6-3.
Giorgi's groundstrokes lit up a competitive final in 's-Hertogenbosch, with the fifth seed just edging it thanks to her precise shot making.
Openings were few and far between at the start of the match as both players served well, Bencic having the first glimpse of a chance in the ninth after a superb backhand lob.
However, Giorgi quickly shut the door with a fierce forehand and unerringly accurate serve.
Two games later she had the first real chance to break after another devastating forehand, with Giorgi wasting no time in converting it to take the set.
Her composure at the crucial moments was key to sealing a maiden title, again having to keep Bencic at bay as her own backhand began to find a nice rhythm.
Having twice battled to hold her own serve, the decisive break came in the eighth game as Bencic's serve deserted her, Giorgi breaking to love to move within touching distance of the title.
A solid service game produced her first match point and her victory was confirmed as Bencic blazed a backhand long.
