Fit-again Sharapova upbeat despite WTA Finals exit
After losing to Petra Kvitova at the WTA Finals in Singapore, Maria Sharapova reflected positively on her return to fitness.
Maria Sharapova remained upbeat despite bowing out of the WTA Finals at the semi-final stage on Saturday.
Sharapova and Garbine Muguruza each came through the group stage in Singapore with 100 per cent records, only to lose their respective last-four matches.
Five-time grand slam champion Sharapova was beaten in straight sets by Petra Kvitova, but nevertheless reflected on a positive end to her solo season - ahead of her participation in next month's Fed Cup final.
After missing this year's US Open through injury, the Russian competed in only one tournament between Wimbledon and the WTA Finals as she suffered further fitness issues.
"I'm really happy that I put myself in good enough shape to come here and compete and come out with three victories," she said.
"I think that was really important and just a good step in the right direction for me as we start the off-season in December and get ready for hopefully a full season for myself.
"That's the only thing I can ask for. Obviously the experience of playing a Fed Cup final will be incredible and something I look forward to as well.
"It's definitely great to be back at a tournament finishing as strong as I can and always look forward to the next season.
"Because I haven't played many matches in the last few months, I kind of took a lot in again, just going through match routines, going through the days where you know you have a match ahead of you.
"So getting that back, you can't replicate that when you're training, it's been nice to feel that again, be in that atmosphere again.
"It's just nice to settle into a tournament, to get wins, to go through the routine of post-match things and recovery, that's something I always take in, don't take for granted and look forward to doing a lot of that next year."
