Federer through in Basel, Young stuns Anderson
Philipp Kohlschreiber took a set off Roger Federer, but was unable to deny him a place in the Swiss Indoors Basel quarter-finals.
Roger Federer kept his hopes of winning a seventh Swiss Indoors Basel title alive on Thursday but the top seed did not have things all his own way in his second-round match against Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Federer won in Basel for a sixth time last year and the world number three is the favourite to add yet another title to his collection this week.
The 17-time grand-slam champion recovered from losing the second set to move into the last eight by seeing off Kohlschreiber 6-4 4-6 6-4 to set up a quarter-final against David Goffin.
Federer only had three break point opportunities, but won two to ensure he prevailed at the expense of the unseeded German.
The legendary Swiss suffered a shock defeat to Albert Ramos-Vinolas in his first game at the Shanghai Masters earlier this month, but remains in the hunt to respond with another triumph in his homeland.
Donald Young was a surprise winner in the round of 16 as he beat fourth seed Kevin Anderson in straight sets.
World number 12 Anderson struggled on serve as he faced 10 break points, four of which were won by Young, and racked up seven double-faults to bow out with a 6-2 7-6 (8-6) defeat.
Young will now face Jack Sock, who accounted for sixth seed and compatriot John Isner 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 to set up another all-United States encounter.
Seventh seed Marin Cilic will take on Rafael Nadal after easing to a 6-3 6-1 triumph over Teymuraz Gabashvili, while Richard Gasquet saw off Dominic Thiem in straight sets, 7-6 (7-1) 6-4.
Elegant Frenchman Gasquet will now come up against Ivo Karlovic, who got the better of qualifier Dusan Lajovic 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 to move into the last eight.
