Federer overcomes battling Granollers
Marcel Granollers put in a creditable performance but could not cause a French Open upset against Roger Federer.
Roger Federer progressed to the French Open third round with a 6-2 7-6 (7-1) 6-3 victory over a resilient Marcel Granollers.
The Swiss had to be at the top of his game to see off his Spanish opponent on Suzanne-Lenglen Court and the straight-sets result did not reflect the creditable fight put up by Granollers.
The match got off to a disappointing start for the world number 57 as 2009 champion Federer registered an early break on his way to clinching a comfortable opening-set victory.
But it was Granollers who made the first breaktrhough in the second - converting his second break point to move 4-2 in front.
Federer hit straight back, though, and romped to victory in the subsequent tie-break by rattling off seven points on the bounce.
That joy was shortlived thanks to Granollers' break in the opening game of the third set, but Federer again found his form when it mattered, winning five consecutive games to turn the set on its head.
Granollers pulled the score back to 5-3 having previously led 4-2 but a return into the net on Federer's first match point handed victory to the second seed.
