Federer: Djokovic rivalry has made me a better player
After moving in front on the head-to-head count against Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer hailed the pair's rivalry.
Roger Federer says his rivalry with Novak Djokovic has helped to make him a better player after the Swiss beat the world number one in the Western and Southern Open final.
Federer was imperious in his 7-6 (7-1) 6-3 triumph, edging ahead in the pair's head-to-head record by taking his 21st victory against the Serb from 41 meetings.
Having secured an 87th tour-level title, Federer reflected on his long-running duel with Djokovic.
"We really get the best out of each other," he said.
"We have improved a lot playing against each other over the years.
"It's very special for me. I will try my best to come back for many years to come."
The Cincinnati event is the last remaining Masters title that Djokovic is yet to win and Federer – who has won it seven times – wants to see that change.
"I really hope he [Djokovic] can win here one day," added Federer. "He deserves it."
