Sara Errani eased into the Rio Open quarter-finals as her Italian countrywoman Roberta Vinci was comfortably beaten on Thursday.

Top seed Errani made a flying start before seeing out a 6-0 7-5 victory over Spain's Lourdes Dominguez Lino on the clay courts in Brazil.

Errani lost just eight points in the first set and, while her momentum was somewhat slowed, she still saw out victory in one hour, 27 minutes at the WTA International event.

There were nine breaks of serve in the second set but Errani managed to hold when serving for it in the 12th game.

Awaiting Errani in the last eight is a surprise opponent in Beatriz Haddad Maia.

The 18-year-old Brazilian wildcard, ranked 234 in the world, took just 69 minutes to crush Slovenian seventh seed Polona Hercog 6-1 6-2.

Vinci fell in just over an hour, going down to Paraguayan Veronica Cepede Royg 6-2 6-3.

The Italian third seed struggled to make inroads on her opponent's serve, winning just 11 return points for the match.

It opens up the draw for Anna Schmiedlova after the Slovakian sixth seed thrashed Paula Ormaechea 6-0 6-2.
