Doi delights in maiden win
A first WTA title came the way of Misaki Doi when the Japanese reeled off six games in a row to beat Mona Barthel in Luxembourg.
Misaki Doi was understandably delighted after claiming her maiden WTA Tour title in style on Sunday with a 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 6-0 victory over Mona Barthel in the Luxembourg Open final.
Appearing in her first final, world number 92 Doi saw her character tested when Barthel - 37 places higher in the rankings - came from a set and a break down to level the match before moving 0-40 up in the opening game of the decider.
However, the 24-year-old Japanese then hit top form to reel off six games in succession and secure a breakthrough win.
"The key point was that first game [in the third set]," Doi is quoted as saying by the WTA's official website.
"It was 0-40 but I tried to focus on every single point and built confidence from there.
"It was an incredible moment [when I won] and I'm just happy!"
Barthel, who went on to gain a consolation success in the doubles final alongside Laura Siegemund, was gracious in defeat.
"I think Misaki played a really good match and a good tournament," said the German.
"I tried everything and it was my last singles match of the year, but in the end, she was just a little bit fresher and fitter."
