Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal all enjoyed relatively comfortable progressions to the third round of the French Open on Thursday.

The trio were the top ranked in action at Roland Garros with Murray the only one to drop a set as Djokovic and Nadal brushed aside Gilles Muller and Nicolas Almagro respectively.

Murray maintained his new-found clay-court form as he survived a second-set blip to progress 6-2 4-6 6-4 6-1 and extend his winning streak on clay to 12 matches.

Nine-time champion Nadal showed further signs of getting back to his best in a 6-4 6-3 6-1 win against compatriot Almagro while top seed Djokovic stayed on course for his first Roland Garros title in a 6-1 6-4 6-4 success.

Seventh seed David Ferrer joined them in the third round after a 6-3 6-2 6-1 victory over Daniel Gimeno-Traver, while Pablo Andujar and Thanasi Kokkinakis came through five-set epics to reach the final 32.

In a match held over from Wednesday due to darkness, Andujar eventually got past Philipp Kohlschreiber while Kokkinakis fought back from two sets down against fellow Australian Bernard Tomic.

Another teenager, Borna Coric, outlasted Tommy Robredo in a five-set thriller that lasted almost four hours with the pair quickly making names for themselves in the draw.

Argentine Leonardo Mayer is also among the final 32, while Kyle Edmund's withdrawal means Nick Kyrgios will be well rested when he faces Andy Murray next.

British qualifier Kyle Edmund beat Stephane Robert but was forced to call time on his campaign in the French capital due to a stomach injury.

Marin Cilic and Simone Bolelli progressed in straight sets against Andrea Arnaboldi and Viktor Troicki respectively.

Andrey Kuznetsov is Nadal's next opponent after the Russian saw off Jurgen Melzer with the home crowd given something to cheer by Jeremy Chardy - the Frenchman easing past John Isner 6-4 4-6 6-3 6-3.

Belgium's David Goffin also needed four sets in his victory over Santiago Giraldo before Jack Sock and Kevin Anderson ensured their progress late in the day.

Meanwhile, home favourite Richard Gasquet will have to come back on Friday to finish his match with Carlos Berlocq, the pair locked at two sets apiece when bad light stopped play.
