Djokovic eases through in New York
Andreas Haider-Maurer made a decent start but Novak Djokovic was far too classy at the US Open.
Novak Djokovic completed a straightforward win over Andreas Haider-Maurer at the US Open on Wednesday.
The world number one was below his best early in the 6-4 6-1 6-2 victory against Austrian Haider-Maurer on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
But Djokovic steadied before taking control to book his place in the third round, where he will face Italian Andreas Seppi.
Djokovic dropped just three games in beating Joao Souza to start his tournament and his comfortable early run continued.
He only lost 12 points on serve and did not face a break point in the win, which came in 90 minutes.
In the end, Haider-Maurer – the world number 52 – made too many mistakes, finishing with 33 unforced errors.
He was in the match early on, with Djokovic unable to make any inroads on return as the opening set looked headed for a tie-break.
But the Serbian nine-time grand slam champion took his chance at the perfect moment as Haider-Maurer served to stay in the set at 4-5.
A pair of unforced errors were followed by a lucky net cord for Djokovic as he broke to love to take the set.
Djokovic took complete control from then on and 13 unforced errors from Haider-Maurer in the second set allowed him to take a two-sets-to-love lead.
With Haider-Maurer struggling to trouble Djokovic when receiving, the match was as good as over when the Serbian broke for 2-1.
He went 5-2 ahead and completed the victory by holding to love when Haider-Maurer committed another unforced error.
