Pablo Cuevas made light work of booking a second-round meeting with third seed Bernard Tomic on day one of the Valencia Open.

In one of two main-draw matches played at the ATP 250 hard-court tournament on Monday, Cuevas opened his campaign with a 6-2 6-3 triumph over Pablo Carreno Busta.

Carreno Busta was unable to carve out a single break point and lost three games on his own serve as he slumped to defeat in just over an hour.

Victory for Uruguay's Cuevas followed another straight-sets triumph earlier in the day, Vasek Pospisil beating Santiago Giraldo 6-4 6-3.

Giraldo has never beaten Pospisil - a player 23 places above him in the ATP rankings - and gave up the only break of the first set when serving to save it at 5-4 down.

Pospisil's strength on his first serve - he dropped just one point in the match - ensured Giraldo was not allowed a way back into the contest.

And another break in game four of the second set set up a routine win for the Canadian.
