Broady stuns Lisicki in Kuala Lumpur, Svitolina through
Unseeded Brit Naomi Broady will face Eugenie Bouchard in the semi-finals in Kuala Lumpur after ousting Sabine Lisicki.
Naomi Broady fought back from the brink of defeat to claim a surprise victory over third seed Sabine Lisicki in the quarter-finals of the Malaysian Open on Friday.
Broady looked to set to miss out on a place in the semi-finals when Lisicki had the chance to serve for the match, but the unseeded Brit won three games in a row to triumph 7-6 (7-4) 1-6 7-5.
World number 96 Broady served 10 aces and broke four times to progress to the last four despite failing to hold on five occasions in Kuala Lumpur.
German Lisicki was left to reflect on what might have been following her first quarter-final of the year, having gone a break up at 5-4 in the decider only to win just one point in the next three games to crash out.
Broady had twice recovered from going a break down to force a tie-break in the opening set and then led 5-1 in the shoot-out before making hard work of finishing off the job.
Lisicki responded impressively by bossing the second set to level the match, but it all went wrong for the world number 31 when it mattered most.
Elina Svitolina rallied from a set down to book her semi-final spot at the expense of Kristina Kucova.
Kucova wasted no time in wrapping up the first set, but that was as good as it got for the world number 139 as Svitolina regained her composure to win 1-6 6-1 6-1 and reach her second semi-final of the year.
Eugenie Bouchard will face Broady at the semi-final stage after the sixth seed from Canada beat Cagla Buyukakcay 6-1 6-4.
Rank outsider Zhu Lin beat Wang Qiang 6-3 6-4 in an all-Chinese encounter to ensure she will take on Svitolina in the last four.
