Berdych cruises through in Halle, Tomic bows out
Third seed Tomas Berdych avoided a first-round upset at the Gerry Weber Open with a 7-5 6-3 win over Victor Estrella Burgos.
Tomas Berdych cruised into round two of the Gerry Weber Open on Tuesday with a straight-sets win over Victor Estrella Burgos.
The third seed overcame a wobble in the opening set in Halle before powering his way to victory, the Czech needing 86 minutes to win 7-5 6-3.
Estrella Burgos surprised his illustrious opponent in the fifth game with a break of serve, but Berdych immediately came back to level - albeit with the help of a lucky net deflection.
Having seen out the set, Berdych was never troubled in the second and served out to love to move into the next round in Germany.
Second seed Kei Nishkori had to save nine break points on his way to a 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 victory over Dominic Thiem, the 2014 semi-finalist exhibiting neat groundstrokes and good touch as he moved into round two.
After taking the first-set tie-break, Nishikori held firm in the second, sealing his victory with a winner at the net and setting up a second-round meeting with Dustin Brown.
Gael Monfils wasted little time getting past Lukas Rosol under the Halle roof - which had been closed due to rain - the Frenchman getting the better of their baseline rallies to win 6-3 6-4.
While the fourth seed was impressive throughout, the same could not be said for Rosol, who was plagued by unforced errors on his way to defeat.
Fellow seeds Tommy Robredo and Ivo Karlovic are also through, the latter surviving an early scare before coming from a set down to beat Santiago Giraldo 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 6-4.
Things were not as easy for Bernard Tomic and Pablo Cuevas, though, the two seeds each beaten in straight sets by Steve Johnson and Jerzy Janowicz respectively.
Ernests Gulbis and Mikhail Kukushkin progressed into round two to face Roger Federer and Monfils respectively, but there was no victory for former champion Tommy Haas, the German losing to Andreas Seppi in only his second tournament after 12 months out with a shoulder injury.
