Bencic fights back to reach Rosmalen quarters
Belinda Bencic continued her comeback from injury with another hard-fought win, this time against Varvara Lepchenko.
Top seed Belinda Bencic came from a set down to progress to the last eight of the Rosmalen Grass Court Championships but Jelena Jankovic and Jelena Ostapenko both crashed out.
Bencic was taken to three sets by Alison Van Uytvanck in her first-round clash and the world number eight was tested again by Varvara Lepchenko.
The Swiss, who prior to her opener had not played since April because of a back injury, fought back to win 3-6 6-3 6-2 against the American after one hour and 46 minutes.
Her victory sets up an all-Swiss quarter-final with Viktorija Golubic, who got the better of fellow qualifier Risa Ozaki 6-4 6-2.
But former world number one and second seed Jankovic will not be in the quarters following her 6-7 (2-7) 6-1 6-4 defeat to Evgeniya Rodina.
Having wasted two set points, Jankovic won the first on a tie-break but was punished by Rodina for failing to take break points as the Russia forced a decider in emphatic fashion.
Jankovic recovered from a break down in the third to level at 3-3, only to immediately lose serve again and allow Rodina to set up a quarter-final with Coco Vandeweghe.
Fourth seed Ostapenko surrendered more meekly as she was defeated 7-5 6-2 by Kateryna Kozlova, who will take on Madison Brengle in the next round.
