Azarenka routs Kerber to end trophy drought
After a luckless run with injuries, Victoria Azarenka was finally a WTA Tour winner again as she lifted the Brisbane International trophy.
Victoria Azarenka ended a near two-and-a-half-year wait for a WTA Tour trophy as she routed Angelique Kerber 6-3 6-1 to clinch the Brisbane International title.
The unseeded Belarusian is a former world number one, but bad luck with foot and thigh injuries hampered her form, leaving her without a title since success in Cincinnati in August 2013.
However, there are signs that Azarenka is approaching her top form after dominating in Brisbane this week, the 26-year-old has dropped just 17 games this week to tie Serena Williams' record when she won the tournament in 2013.
A four-time winner on Tour last year, Kerber had no answer for her opponent's dominance, as Azarenka hit 23 winners to just nine unforced errors on her way to a sixth consecutive win over the German.
The writing was on the wall for Kerber when she double faulted on break point for the second time in the match to hand Azarenka a 5-1 second-set lead.
And she needed no second invitation to see out the match and win in Brisbane for the second time in her career.
Victory means that Azarenka guarantees a top-16 seed for the upcoming Australian Open and she is sure to be among the favourites at Melbourne Park as she attempts to win the grand slam for the third time in her career.
