Austrian synchronised swimmers claim silver
The Alexandri sisters claimed synchronised swimming silver for Austria four days after three team-mates were hit by a bus.
Austrian synchronised swimmers Anna-Maria and Eirini-Marina Alexandri won silver medals at European Games on Monday, only four days after three of their team-mates were hit by a bus.
Vanessa Sahinovic, Luna Pajer and Verena Brei all suffered injuries in the incident last Thursday, with emotional scenes following at the weekend as the depleted Austrian team completed their free combination routine without them.
And, after taking part in the preliminary round of the free duet on Friday, the Alexandri sisters rose to the occasion to claim silver in the duets behind Valeriya Filenkova and Daria Kulagina of Russia, with the Ukrainian pair of Yana Nariezhna and Yelyzaveta Yakhno in third.
There was more success for Russia in the team event as they beat Spain and Ukraine to the gold.
Mariya Stadnyk provided more for hosts Azerbaijan to cheer about by claiming gold in the women's 48kg freestyle wrestling final with victory over Bulgaria's Elitsa Yankova.
Sweden's Sofia Matsson won the 55kg freestyle, Marianna Sastin of Hungary triumphed in the 60kg discipline and Ukrainian Alina Stadnik Makhynia was victorious in the 69kg.
Portugal's first gold of the Games came with a 3-1 success over France in the men's team table tennis final, singles wins for Tiago Apolonia, Marcos Freitas and Joao Geraldo securing the tie.
Victory for Han Ying over Britt Eerland in the final match of the women's team event saw Germany win their gold medal tie with Netherlands 3-2.
Germany enjoyed a successful day in the canoe sprint. Max Hoff edged out Portugal's Fernando Pimenta in the kayak single 1000 metres while Sebastian Brendel was triumphant over the same distance in the canoe single.
Hungary's women took gold ahead of Germany in the 500m kayak four and their compatriots Zoltan Kammerer and Tamas Szalai ensured the same result in the kayak double 1000m as Max Rendschmidt and Marcus Gross settled for silver.
Belarusian brothers Andrei and Aliaksandr Bahdanovich claimed canoe double 1000m gold ahead of Russia's Alexey Korovashkov and Ilya Pervukhin.
While Russia missed out in that event, their artistic gymnasts dominated proceedings and earned gold in both the men's and women's team events.
