Almaty, Beijing present 2022 Winter Olympics bids
The 2022 Winter Olympics bidders Almaty and Beijing stated their cases to the IOC on Tuesday, less than two months out from the vote.
Almaty and Beijing presented their bids for the 2022 Winter Olympics on Tuesday, ahead of the vote on the host city in July.
The IOC Evaluation Commission heard 45-minute presentations from each of the Kazakh and Chinese cities in Lausanne, with both impressing IOC president Thomas Bach.
"It was really impressive to see how both cities had embraced the reforms of Olympic Agenda 2020 just six months after the recommendations were unanimously approved by the IOC," Bach said.
"You could see a clear focus in both bids on sustainability and affordability.
"Both presented very well-balanced budgets, and both clearly demonstrated what they wanted to achieve, following Olympic Agenda 2020, by building their proposals into the long-term development plans of their city, region and country."
The Evaluation Commission then engaged in a forum with IOC members, along with presidents and secretaries-general from Olympic winter federations.
The main point of difference between the two bids was Almaty pointed to their capability to produce natural snow, while Beijing - if awarded the games - would likely be forced to use artificial snow.
Among those present to boost Almaty's bid were Kazakhstan Prime Minister Karim Massimov, while Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong led Beijing's bid.
The host city will be elected in Kuala Lumpur on July 31.
