Alipov shoots his way to gold and a place in Rio
Alexey Alipov took gold in the men's trap at the European Games, securing Russia a place the 2016 Olympics in the process.
It was a golden day for Russia at the European Games on Wednesday, as Alexey Alipov triumphed in the men's trap, while the rhythmic gymnastics team prevailed in the all-around final.
Alipov, an Olympic gold medallist from the 2004 Olympic Games, missed two of his first four targets in the semi-final, but recovered his poise to take the win.
After his poor start in the semi, he hit 11 successive targets to force a play-off with Giovanni Pellielo, the Italian faltering on his eighth target.
Alipov sealed gold - and a quota spot for Russia at Rio 2016 - with a perfect 15 from 15 in the final, seeing off the challenge of world champion Erik Varga, whose one miss proved costly. Pellielo took bronze ahead of Ed Ling.
"I am so happy because with this win now I can participate to Rio 2016, which is amazing and exciting."
Varga added: "This is preparation for Rio, but it is also the European Games and had the best shooters in the world, and was hard," added Varga.
In the rhythmic gymnastics, Russia's minor errors during the clubs-and-hoops exercise did not prove costly as they took group all-around gold with a score of 35.300, while Israel (35.050) took silver and Belarus (34.850) bronze.
"We believed in victory," said Russia's Anastasiia Maksimova. "We believed in ourselves. Our mission was to go onto the podium and demonstrate our skills.
"The first exercise was good, but we made two mistakes in the second one. I give the performance nine out of 10."
In the mixed team archery final, Italy took gold with a 5-3 win over Georgia, and bronze went to Ukraine - 5-1 victors over Slovenia.
Russia's strong day continued in the wrestling, as Viktor Lebedev and Aniuar Geduev took glory in the respective 57 and 74-kilogram classes.
There was also reason for the home fans to cheer in the 65 and 97kg classifications, as Togrul Asgarov and Khetag Gazyumov triumphed in their finals.
In the taekwondo, Olympic gold medallist Jade Jones came out on top in the women's 57kg final, defeating Ana Zaninovic 12-9, while in the men's 68kg, home favourite Aykhan Taghizade overcame Karol Robak 10-9.
There were also two more golds on offer at Baku Shooting Centre, with Serbia scooping both.
