Edin Džeko scores a stunning volley to give Roma all three points against Torino
Mitch Freeley
Edin Džeko scored a stunning last-gasp volley to spare Roma’s blushes with a 1-0 opening day victory over Torino.
The Bosnian striker who has so often down the years saved Roma was the hero again as his specular curved strike floated past Salvatore Sirigu into the top corner on the 89th minute. Although much of the praise should go to substitute Justin Klivert who calmly beat two Torino defenders before floating the ball into the path of Džeko. The teenage striker showed shades of his father Patrick Klivert, in his composure to set up the winner.
Roma had the majority of the possession and chances in the contest, although it was Torino who had the ball in the back of the net during the second half thanks to Iago Falque, however, Roma was rescued by VAR which highlighted Ola Aina as marginally offside in the build-up.
The tie opened up in the final ten minutes as both sides looked for a winner, Dzeko’s thumping header hit the upright whilst Iago Falque saw his shot from distance fizz over the bar.
Just as it looked like both sides were heading for a draw, Dzeko produced a moment of magic and a stunning goal to open the Gialorossi’s 2018-2019 Serie A account. Roma will take on Atalanta in their second game of the season next weekend.

As for Roma, it’s been a busy summer on the transfer front with a host of players joining the side. It’s safe to say that the Romans have injected youthful players to their side, with Justin Kluivert, in particular, catching the eye. The biggest question for Roma fans will be if so many players can gel in time to make a credible title push. The pressure is on Eusebio Di Francesco to deliver.
Key Man
With Radja Nainggolan moving to rivals Inter Milan, Roma turned to PSG midfielder Javier Pastore to fill the gap. The Argentine midfielder was underutilized during his stay in Paris, and returned to Serie A with the promise of regular first-team football. Pastore is expected to start in central midfield and will be charged with starting the attacks for his side.
