The Detroit Tigers moved into an MLB wildcard place as the Boston Red Sox completed a sweep of the Baltimore Orioles.

The Tigers enjoyed two wins over the Minnesota Twins, claiming the opener of the double-header 9-2 before a 4-2 victory.

Justin Verlander struck out 11 over six innings in the second win as the Tigers moved into a wildcard spot in the American League (AL).

They are half a game clear of the Baltimore Orioles, who were swept by the in-form Red Sox after a 5-3 loss.

The Atlanta Braves stretched their winning run with a 6-3 victory over the Miami Marlins and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1.

The Los Angeles Angels shut out the Houston Astros 2-0, the New York Mets walked off for a 9-8 win over the Philadelphia Phillies and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 2-0.

The Cleveland Indians got the better of the Kansas City Royals 5-2, the San Francisco Giants edged the San Diego Padres 2-1 and the Los Angeles Dodgers overcame the Colorado Rockies 7-4.

As Atlanta won their sixth game in a row, Matt Kemp bashed two homers to give him 33 this season, the most since his All-Star year of 2011 with the Dodgers. 

METS WALK OFF

A day after Yoenis Cespedes just missed a walk-off home run, his team-mate Asdrubal Cabrera hit a no-doubter in the bottom of the 11th as the Mets moved a half-game in front of the idle St Louis Cardinals in the National League (NL) wildcard race.

FREEMAN CONTINUES STREAK

With a base hit against the Marlins, Freddie Freeman extended his hitting streak to 26 games, tied for the second-longest in MLB this season and the  longest by a Braves player since Dan Uggla in 2011 (33 games). 

YANKEES IN TORONTO

Opening an important three-game series, the Blue Jays send Fransisco Liriano (7-13, 5.08 ERA) to the mound. Toronto are currently one game ahead of Detroit for the first wildcard spot, with the Yankees three games out of the second spot. Bryan Mitchell (1-1, 6.00 ERA) will toe the rubber looking for consecutive wins against the Jays.
