New stadium won't make Redskins change name, says president
The Redskins' FedEx Field lease runs through 2026, but it has begun discussing designs and potential sites in Maryland, Virginia and D.C.
Washington Redskins team president Bruce Allen has dismissed any notion of the NFL franchise changing their name in order to get a new stadium.
The Redskins moniker has long drawn criticism over potential offence it could cause in the Native American community.
"No," Allen said without elaboration, his one-word answer leaving little doubt on Monday when the question was posed before the team's final practice of training camp.
The team's FedEx Field lease runs through 2026 in Landover, Maryland, but multiple reports say team officials already have begun discussions about designs and the site, with possible locations including Maryland and Virginia, as well as the District of Columbia.
Allen said that Redskins have had "great conversations" with officials from all three potential areas.
