With Davis Love III widely expected to be named as the United States' next Ryder Cup captain, former skipper Paul Azinger says he has no interest in taking up the role again.

Azinger led the US to their last victory in 2008, as they defeated Nick Faldo's European side 16 1/2 - 11 1/2 at Valhalla.

Since then, Europe have lifted the trophy on each of the past three occasions, including a 16 1/2 - 11 1/2 success at Gleneagles in September last year.

Tom Watson's captaincy came under criticism for that defeat - especially from Phil Mickelson, who used Azinger's leadership in 2008 as a positive example of how it should be done.

However, with Love - who was in charge when the US gave up a commanding lead on the final day at Medinah in 2012 - expected to be announced as captain for 2016, Azinger has backed that decision.

"If true, Davis is an excellent choice for many reasons," he told GolfChannel.com.

"He's still connected to the players. He was very prepared and thorough in 2012. Davis will bring much needed continuity to the process.

"I had no interest in being the captain in 2016 for many reasons, personal and business.

"I suggested Davis to the powers that be at the PGA. He's a logical choice if he wants it."
