Lance Armstrong will return to cycling in October to take part in a fundraising ride in benefit of Livestrong, the cancer charity he founded during his controversial career.

Livestrong, which started up in 1997, supports people with the illness, but the cyclist was removed from their board before his doping admission in January 2013.

He has not taken part in any event for the organisation since, but will return in his home state of Texas later this year.

Armstrong has made headlines again in recent days, after being ordered to pay $10million to an insurance firm that had paid bonuses to the American during his seven Tour de France victories - titles he has since been stripped of.

The 43-year-old was also fined for a driving incident, having hit two parked cars near his Aspen, California home.

Armstrong donated $5,000 in signing up for the ride, which has four courses ranging from 20 miles to 100 miles.
