Alonso hopes radio rant will trigger 'big solutions' for struggling McLaren
McLaren amassed just 27 points last season and Fernando Alonso believes his radio rant in Japan will help trigger changes to engine set-up.
Fernando Alonso is hopeful his outburst about McLaren's Honda engine will lead to positive changes that make the team more competitive in 2016.
Alonso was forced to defend his actions after controversially labelling the power unit "embarrassing" over team radio during the Japanese Grand Prix in September, when he and team-mate Jenson Button finished 11th and 16th respectively.
The two-time Formula One world champion questioned immediately after the race whether the transmission - "private chats" as he called them – should have been made public, but the Spaniard thinks his radio rant was a good way of fronting up to the issue as McLaren look to learn lessons from a season in which they amassed just 27 points.
He told BBC Sport: "The actions we need to take next year to be competitive [are] quite extreme.
"For big problems you need big solutions, and I think maybe that helped a bit for the big solutions."
Despite voicing concerns over the team's engine, Alonso insists he is committed to McLaren, who he rejoined 12 months ago.
Nevertheless, an 11-point haul was a far cry from challenging for the title in previous seasons.
"I don't think it was the best [season] of me," he said.
"I had some good races but here and there not consistent enough."
