Barthel sets up Larsson final in Bastad
Johanna Larsson can win her first WTA title after reaching the Swedish Open final, where she meets current champion Mona Barthel.
Mona Barthel is one match away from defending the Swedish Open title after she set up a final with home favourite Johanna Larsson on Saturday.
German Barthel was the victor of the clay-court event in Bastad 12 months ago, and she defeated Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino 6-3 6-2 in this year's semi-finals to return to the showpiece.
Barthel, seeded fourth, broke at the first time of asking and - although she handed that break straight back - soon established a dominant 5-1 first-set lead.
Arruabarrena-Vecino managed to gain one break back, but Barthel quickly recovered her composure to serve out to love the second time of asking.
It was a similar story in the second set with Arruabarrena-Vecino holding serve just once. Barthel had the chance to serve out for the match at 5-2, which she duly did with her fourth match point.
Standing in her way of retaining the top prize is Larsson, who is hoping to clinch her first WTA Tour title after beating Yulia Putintseva 6-4 6-2.
The Swede, ranked number 72 in the world, did not face a single break point throughout the match and wrapped up the win in little over 80 minutes.
Larsson has played Barthel three times in the past, losing on each occasion.
