United States win women's water polo gold medal
The United States became the first women's water polo team to successfully defend Olympic gold on Friday, downing Italy 12-5 to lift the title in Rio de Janeiro.
The world champions, who have won every major tournament they've contested since early in 2014, were never really troubled by Athens 2004 Olympic champions Italy. Kelly Neushul scored three goals as the US won with quarters of 4-1, 1-2, 4-1 and 3-1.
They were up 9-4 going into the final period and ran out comfortable winners, breaking the record for most goals scored by a team in an Olympic women's final.
Russia captured bronze after a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Hungary -- who were fourth for the third straight Games. The game was tied 11 times in regulation and six more in the shoot-out in which Russia finally prevailed 7-6 for a 19-18 win.
