Wales weathered a second-half storm from Fiji to secure a 23-13 victory at the Millennium Stadium which puts them on the brink of the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals.

Injury-hit Wales were on a high after their impressive Pool A victory over hosts England at Twickenham on Saturday, but euphoria turned to tension in Cardiff as Fiji gave Warren Gatland's men a major scare and denied them a bonus point.

The impressive Gareth Davies became the leading try-scorer in the tournament with four when he crossed early on and Scott Baldwin also went over in the first half, but two Ben Volavola penalties kept Fiji in touch at 17-6 at half-time.

The Pacific Islanders had lost their first two games of the tournament, but showed their quality in the second half and a fine try from Vereniki Goneva set Wales hearts racing.

Wales came under plenty of pressure, but stood firm and Dan Biggar added another two penalties to become the leading points scorer for the tournament with 13 in the game as Gatland's men moved top of the pool with a third win out of three.

Wales could be guaranteed a place in the last eight if England fail to beat Australia, while Fiji are unable to secure the third place which would guarantee them a place in the next World Cup.

Roared on by a fired-up home crowd, Wales made a blistering start and George North raised the decibels when he made an early incisive break before being brought down not far from the line.

Fiji were unable to weather the storm and in-form scrum-half Gareth Davies ploughed through a tackle after dropping his shoulder to score the opening try only six minutes in to leave Biggar with a simple conversion.  

Luke Charteris came off the bench to replace Bradley Davies after the lock took a blow to the nose and Fiji then showed their power in the scrum to win a penalty, which Volavola booted through the posts.

Volavola then missed a chance to make it 7-6 before the trusty boot of Biggar restored Wales' lead to 10-3 and there was relief for Wales fans when Bradley Davies and Alex Cuthbert returned to the fray after going off for treatment. 

Levani Botia produced a brilliant last-ditch tackle to deny Taulupe Faletau a second try following a great break down the middle from the lively Matthew Morgan.

Fiji were unable to contain Wales, though, and the second try came nine minutes before the break when Baldwin touched down on the left and Biggar again added the extras, but another Volavola penalty made it 17-6 at half-time.

The Pacific Islanders caused Wales more problems at the start of the second half and were rewarded when Goneva rounded off a brilliant break to score, Volavola converting soon after missing another penalty.

Biggar made it 20-13 with yet another penalty, but Fiji were in the mood and it needed some desperate Wales defending to keep them at bay.

Another Biggar penalty settled the nerves and, with Fiji running out of steam, Gareth Davies was denied another try by the television match official, but Wales saw out another victory.
