Toovey follows Stone in NRL coach sackings
A day after Newcastle Knights coach Rick Stone was sacked, Geoff Toovey's departure from the Manly Sea Eagles was also confirmed.
Geoff Toovey became the second NRL coach sacked in as many days as the Manly Sea Eagles confirmed he would depart at the end of the season.
Toovey, a former Sea Eagles great as a player, was appointed the club's head coach from the 2012 season and led them to the grand final the next year.
His sacking was expected, and confirmed on Tuesday.
Toovey will get paid out the remainder of his contract - which was set to run until the end of the 2016 campaign, during which former St George-Illawarra, New South Wales and Australia five-eighth Trent Barrett will be coach.
Barrett has been appointed on a three-year deal.
"Geoff has been an influential figure within the Sea Eagles organisation for almost three decades," Manly chief executive Joe Kelly said.
"His contribution on and off the field is unprecedented, and he will always be one of the club's favourite sons.
"Geoff and the club remain firmly committed to finishing this season off on the highest possible note."
The Sea Eagles sit 11th on the ladder but are still in finals contention, four points behind the eighth-placed New Zealand Warriors.
Toovey's sacking comes a day after the Newcastle Knights parted ways with coach Rick Stone.
The Knights board decided Stone's position was untenable, with the club third-bottom with just six wins in 18 matches this season.
