Tigers equal biggest comeback as Wasps fall short at Chiefs
Donncha O'Callaghan's dismissal proved pivotal as Leicester Tigers pulled off a historic comeback to defeat Worcester Warriors.
Leicester Tigers matched the biggest comeback in their history as they capitalised on Donncha O'Callaghan's sending off to win 29-20 at Worcester Warriors in the Premiership on Saturday.
Worcester led 17-0 after 35 minutes and were ahead 17-7 at half-time, however, the game turned in the 42nd minute when O'Callaghan - having earlier been sin-binned for pulling down a maul - was shown a second yellow for the same offence.
Telusa Veainu narrowed the gap to five points with his 51st-minute try after Worcester's Gareth Milasinovich had been sent to the sin bin to reduce the Warriors to 13 men.
Tom Heathcote and Owen Williams then traded penalties before Leicester took the lead with a penalty try eight minutes from time - with the Warriors' Matt Cox shown a yellow card by referee Wayne Barnes.
Lachlan McCaffrey went over for his maiden Leicester try a minute from time to secure a bonus point as the visitors matched the record 17-point comeback set in 1999 when the Tigers came from 20-3 down to defeat London Irish 31-30.
Wasps could not match the efforts of third-placed Leicester, their comeback attempt falling short in a 41-27 home defeat to Exeter Chiefs, who at least temporarily leapfrogged defending champions Saracens at the top.
The game was marred by an injury to centre Henry Slade, who suffered a suspected broken leg.
Exeter led 27-13 at the interval thanks in part to two tries from Thomas Waldrom. However, Ashley Johnson and Lorenzo Cittadini brought Wasps level.
The Chiefs regained the lead in the 56th minute when Waldrom completed his hat-trick before Moray Low made the game safe nine minutes from time with Exeter's sixth try.
Wing Tim Visser was another player to record a treble as Harlequins cruised to a 38-7 victory over winless London Irish.
With new national coach Eddie Jones in attendance at The Stoop, England scrum-half Danny Care celebrated his new long-term contract with a try.
Elsewhere, JJ Hanrahan kicked a 72nd-minute penalty to give Northampton Saints a 13-11 win at Bath.
