Scott trumps Garcia to win Honda Classic
Adam Scott won his first tournament since 2014, with Sergio Garcia forced to settle for second spot at Palm Beach.
Former world number one Adam Scott ended his title drought after holding on to beat Sergio Garcia by one stroke at The Honda Classic.
Scott had not claimed a tournament worldwide since claiming the 2014 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, but the Australian returned to winning ways after carding a final-round 70 at the PGA Tour event at Palm Beach on Sunday.
The 35-year-old, who shared a four-stroke lead over the chasing pack with Garcia at the start of play, finished nine under through 72 holes for his 12th Tour title.
Garcia was in the mix at the turn after parring the front nine, but the Spaniard had three bogeys and two birdies for a one-over 71.
Putting had long been Scott's Achilles heel, having ranked outside the top 100 on Tour in strokes gained in four of the past five seasons, with last year's ranking of 158th his worst.
However, Scott – who finished runner-up at last week's Northern Trust Open – continued his renewed accuracy with the putter, holing a total of one eagle, 17 birdies and 47 pars, while only dropping seven shots throughout the four days.
Blayne Barber and Justin Thomas tied for third at five under, four shots off the pace.
A stroke further back was Graeme McDowell, who took fifth thanks to a final-round 69.
Vijay Sing and Rickie Fowler shared sixth position, a shot ahead of William McGirt and Billy Horschel.
Sung Kang, Luke List, John Senden and Scott Brown rounded out the top 10.
Elsewhere in the field, last year's champion Padraig Harrington ended the tournament 13 shots off the pace, while Justin Hicks – who was excellent in carding a 65 on Thursday – closed with an abysmal 82.
