Russia's government plan to fight a FIBA-enforced ban that could see the country's basketball teams miss the 2016 Olympic Games.

The Russian Basketball Federation (RBF) confirmed the suspension on their official website, posting a letter sent to them by basketball's world governing body on Wednesday.

Ongoing confusion over the RBF's management is behind the ban, which could rule Russia out of September's EuroBasket championship - an event that carries Olympic qualification places.

Both Russia's men's and women's teams reached bronze-medal matches in London three years ago, with the male team beating Argentina to secure a medal.

Russia sit sixth in FIBA's world rankings, and the country's sports minister Vitaly Mutko is determined to have the sanction quashed at a FIBA conference next weekend.

"I will fly there myself to meet with them (FIBA) and take care of the situation. You can't deal with Russia like this," Mutko told TASS.

"I see no government’s interference in this case."

Former NBA star Andrey Kirilenko told TASS: "This is not news for me, but once again nobody wants to assume responsibility for this.

"We are losing more and more of our positions and the sooner the issue with [RBF] elections is settled the sooner the work will start."

"The most important for FIBA is the legitimacy and transparency in all legal aspects," he said. "We do not have it at the moment and we received a relevant reaction."
