Phelps to make competitive return from suspension
Swimmer Michael Phelps is set for a comeback to the pool, six months after he was suspended by USA Swimming.
Michael Phelps will make his official return to swimming at next week's Arena Pro Swim Series in Mesa after serving out a six-month suspension for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Phelps' ban for DUI, excessive speed and crossing double lane lines in Baltimore last October - handed down by USA Swimming - expired on Monday.
The 18-time Olympic gold medallist is now free to compete in Mesa, Arizona from April 15 to 18, at the location where the 29-year-old returned to the pool last year after two years in retirement.
Phelps took part at the American Short Course Champions in Austin, Texas last month, though it was an exhibition swim.
"My suspension is finally up! Time to get back in the pool and race again! Looking forward to #mesa," Phelps tweeted on Tuesday.
Phelps was stopped on September 30 after being clocked by police doing 85mph in a 45mph zone.
Having been "unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests", Phelps was charged with driving under the influence, excessive speed and crossing double lane lines.
Phelps checked into a program, with a view of dealing with his issues following the incident, which plunged his 2015 World Championships participation in jeopardy.
