Lancaster calls for England to put on a show
Under-pressure coach Stuart Lancaster wants Uruguay to bear the brunt of England's Rugby World Cup frustration in Manchester this weekend.
Stuart Lancaster has urged his England players to take the pain of their early Rugby World Cup exit out on Uruguay and finish a miserable tournament on a high note.
England were expected to be one of the main contenders to lift the Webb Ellis Cup on home soil, but instead they have become the first host nation in the tournament's 28-year history to fail to make the quarter-finals.
Defeats against Wales and Australia at Twickenham ensured England will make an early exit from the competition after their final Pool A match against Uruguay in Manchester on Saturday.
Wales and Australia will do battle at Twickenham to decide who will top the pool, leaving England to ponder what might have been ahead of a dead rubber against the South Americans at the City of Manchester Stadium.
Lancaster and his players have come under fire as a result of their World Cup failure and the head coach has had to contend with questions over his future.
The 46-year-old said he is paying no attention to speculation and stressed that a new-look England side - which includes eight changes to the team that started against the Wallabies - owe the fans a stirring performance.
He said: "It is important for me personally that the players go out and get rid of that frustration and put in a positive performance against Uruguay. We have played some good rugby over the last 12-18 months and I want to see that tomorrow.
"When we went to Argentina on tour we played in Uruguay and it was a really tough game, it will be very similar I think. As with all these games in this World Cup there is no team I have seen play that has been broken down easily. It will take time and it will be the same tomorrow I'm sure.
"There a lot of people who have waited a long time to see England play in the north of England. I have friends who have tickets who are really excited about coming to see England play.
"We have a lot of young talent on show and that talent will excite the crowd. It's down to us. The performance has to excite the crowd and leave people with the feeling that actually this is a good team."
Sam Burgess has been left out of the squad, while Exeter Chiefs duo Henry Slade and Jack Nowell make their World Cup debuts at outside centre and wing respectively.
Fly-half George Ford, scrum-half Danny Care, full-back Alex Goode and loosehead prop Mako Vunipola also start, while James Haskell and Nick Easter get their chance in the back row.
Felipe Berchesi replaces Alejo Duran at fly-half in the Uruguay side, with Mateo Sanguinetti coming in at loosehead prop at the expense of Alejo Corral.
Uruguay have lost all three of their matches so far at this tournament without claiming a bonus point. They were hammered 111-13 when they faced eventual winners England in the 2003 World Cup.
