Eddie Jones insists Japan's astonishing Rugby World Cup victory over South Africa is "just the start" as they aim to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament for the first time.

Karne Hesketh's last-gasp try enabled Jones' side to pull off the biggest shock in rugby history - and an upset to rank alongside sport's greatest surprises - at Brighton's American Express Community Stadium on Saturday.

Having twice declined the opportunity to kick at goal when a penalty would have tied the scores, Japan were rewarded for their boldness as Hesketh went over to leave both the Springboks and a sizeable global audience stunned.

Pool B now appears wide open, with Japan in position to compete for one of two qualification slots.

"It's quite incredible," former Australia coach Jones told BBC Radio 5 live.

"We thought we could compete but to beat South Africa is a fantastic achievement for the team and it's a great day for Japanese rugby.

"Japan can only play one way, we've got a little team, so we have to move the ball around and cause problems.

"Today is just the start. The target now is to make the quarter-finals and we have got Scotland in four days' time so we cannot rest on our laurels."

Japan came into the game on the back of an 18-match winless run at the Rugby World Cup, with their only previous victory having come against Zimbabwe in 1991.

Jones hopes this remarkable triumph will inspire a new generation, ahead of Japan hosting the next edition of the tournament in 2019.

"If you are a child in Japan you will watch this and you will want to play rugby for Japan in the next World Cup," Jones added.
