Two-time Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah became the first Briton to run a half marathon under an hour as he demolished the European record in Lisbon on Sunday.

Farah burst clear of Kenyan Micah Kogo in the final stages to take 20 seconds out of Fabian Roncero's 14-year-old record, clocking 59 minutes and 32 seconds.

The record-breaking win provided Farah with a perfect birthday present, just a day before he turns 32.

"It feels amazing, I got massive support from the crowd," he told the International Association of Athletics Federations' official website.

"It wasn't easy, the race organisers put in a great field. To win here was hard, but it's my birthday tomorrow so it's a good birthday present.

"I feel so happy to break the British record and European record.

"My legs were so tired. Normally when you cross the line you step over the tape, but I was so tired couldn't lift my legs and tripped over it."
