Eubank Sr: My son would 'wreck' Golovkin
Gennady Golovkin is one of the leading boxers in the world, but Chris Eubank Sr believes his son would make light work of the Kazakh.
Chris Eubank Sr has boldly claimed his son would "wreck" middleweight king Gennady Golovkin if the two were to meet.
A fight between Chris Eubank Jr and Golovkin appeared close to being finalised last year, but negotiations broke down - with promoter Eddie Hearn blaming the Eubanks - and the Kazakh went on to maintain his unbeaten record with a fifth-round stoppage of Kell Brook.
Golovkin's next contest will see him face Daniel Jacobs - the WBA's secondary title-holder - in March, while Eubank Jr will take on Renold Quinlan for the lightly regarded IBO super-middleweight title in January.
Eubank Jr (23-1) has yet to meet an opponent of Golovkin's calibre, but the former's father - himself a renowned former middleweight and super-middleweight champion - displayed typical confidence when talking up the prospect of a future bout between the duo.
"Junior isn't a good fighter; he's a great fighter. And it's his time now to prove that he can be a great champion," Eubank Sr told IFL TV.
"I watched, the other day, [Sergey] Kovalev fight [Andre] Ward. In the third round, I believe Ward threw about 35 punches. That's why I say, at light-heavyweight, these guys can't live with Junior.
"They can't live with him because you can't live with someone who's throwing three times as many, on average. And he can do this for 12 rounds, so the math actually says he can't be beaten, so long as he follows strategy.
"With a fighter like Golovkin, we know who he is and I believe Junior wrecks him. And now we have a surer chance of making this fight happen, rather than leaving it to other guys.
"They [other promoters] let us down. They had a chance to be involved but they couldn't deliver. So it comes back to who? The patriarch. With my team, we have to do it."
