Barguil claims Bastille Day glory as Aru stays in yellow
There was a French stage winner on the Tour de France for the first time in 12 years thanks to Warren Barguil.
Warren Barguil gave the home fans further reason for celebration on Bastille Day as he claimed victory on stage 13 of the Tour de France, with Fabio Aru retaining the yellow jersey.
Aru had taken the yellow jersey from defending champion Chris Froome on stage 12, but the general classification group played second fiddle to the battle at the front on Friday's 101-kilometre route from Saint-Girons to Foix, which marked the final stage in the Pyrenees.
Froome and Aru finished a minute and 48 seconds down on Sunweb rider Barguil, who outpaced Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo) at the finish to claim his third Grand Tour stage triumph, having won twice on the 2013 Vuelta a Espana.
After a frenetic start, Contador and Mikel Landa put distance between themselves and the chasing pack, the Spaniard the first man up the second of three category-one climbs.
They were eventually joined by Movistar's Nairo Quintana and Barguil with 500m left on the final climb up the Mur de Peguere, and it was Barguil - who leads the King of the Mountains standings - who reached the summit first.
Aru and Froome traded attacks on the descent but neither was able to manufacture any breathing room, though Simon Yates (Orica-Scott) and Dan Martin (Quick-Step Floors) were able to break away from the GC group.
Centre stage was therefore taken by the leading quartet and it was Contador who attacked first inside the flamme rouge.
However, Barguil responded brilliantly, taking the outside line on the final turn and surging ahead of Contador to become the first French rider to win on Bastille Day for 12 years.
Aru remains six seconds ahead of Froome, with Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale) 25 seconds behind the leader.
