MotoGP must do something about winglets, says Marquez
Two-time MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez believes the sport must do something about the use of winglets on bikes.
Marc Marquez believes the development of aerodynamic winglets in MotoGP will continue to spiral out of control unless organisers regulate their use.
The Repsol Honda rider tested a multi-wing combination during testing in Jerez on Monday, topping the timesheets ahead of Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo.
Winglets in the sport have caused some controversy since Ducati adopted the idea last year, with Marquez's team-mate Dani Pedrosa concerned injuries will be caused.
And two-time world champion Marquez said while the winglets have potential, they must be regulated properly before any damage is done.
"Today we tried many, many, many things – we did many laps from the morning until the last hour," Marquez said. "Happy with the feeling.
"We tried different wings, and it looks that they work in a different way. But they have some potential. It looks like now we've started that we'll never stop, so for the future we must do something.
"At the moment in the rules we can do it, so we are working on the aerodynamics to try to improve."
Winglets have already been banned from Moto2, with Moto3 set to outlaw the components from the start of 2017.
Marquez leads the 2016 championship standings with 82 points after the first four rounds.
