Gordon wins as Kenseth gets revenge on Logano
Matt Kenseth got his revenge on Joey Logano, crashing the Chase leader as Jeff Gordon won the Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500.
Jeff Gordon advanced to the Championship Four after winning the Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500.
On a normal Sunday in the NASCAR world, Gordon's victory at Martinsville Speedway would be the big news, the feel-good story of the year in the sport.
The 44-year-old driver, who is retiring at the end of the season, collected his first victory of 2015 in south western Virginia.
His 93rd career NASCAR Cup victory also clinched him a spot in the championship round of the Chase, the four-driver showdown in the season finale at Homestead. And that sets up the possibility for the ultimate swan song, that one of the sport's all-time good guys could win his fifth NASCAR Cup championship in his final race.
Feel-good stuff, for sure, but it was the second-biggest story of the day at the half-mile short track.
Instead, everyone is still buzzing about Matt Kenseth's move that took out Chase frontrunner and race leader Joey Logano.
Two weeks ago, Kenseth vowed he would get revenge on Logano after the Team Penske driver spun him out of the lead in the final laps at Kansas.
So when the veteran driver slammed into left side of Logano's Ford, sending Logano into the wall at Martinsville, it certainly looked like he got his wish, inflicting a costly blow to the Chase leader.
Kenseth, who had right-front damage from an earlier incident, said he could not get his car to turn, sending him slamming into Logano with 47 laps to go.
NASCAR did not buy the explanation, and parked Kenseth for the rest of the afternoon.
Logano, who led 207 laps on the afternoon, certainly had one of the cars to beat before Kenseth crashed him out of the lead.
His misfortune opened the door for Gordon, who prevailed in a green-white-checkered restart to win for the ninth time at Martinsville. Jamie McMurray, Denny Hamlin, Dale Earnhardt Jr and Kyle Busch rounded out the top five.
As for the rest of the Chase contenders, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr are tied for second behind Gordon, eight points back.
Kevin Harvick is 10 points back, with Carl Edwards 17 behind. Brad Keselowski is 34 points behind Gordon, while Kurt Busch is 36 back.
As for Logano, he heads into next week's race at Texas Motor Speedway last in the Chase standings, 38 points behind Gordon.
