Niang and Castillo strike as Rennes stun Ligue 1 champions PSG
Goals from M'Baye Niang and Romain Del Castillo handed Rennes a vital 2-1 early-season win over Ligue 1 champions PSG on Sunday evening.
It started so well for the Parisians, Edinson Cavani opened the scoring, pouncing from a horrific defensive lapse from Rennes defender Damien Da Silva who passed the ball to the Uruguayan hitman who made no mistake from close range.
PSG could and perhaps should have made it 2-0 after the restart Kylian Mbappe put the afterburners on to blitz past Da Silva and cut in from the left, his shot smashed into the side netting.
Rennes quickly found themselves back into the tie levelling through M'Baye Niang who killed Hamari Traoré’s cross before turning Marquinhos and arrowing a shot out of the reach of Alphonse Areola. It was just what the home side needed heading into the second half break.
Amazingly Rennes took the lead with the second half just three minutes old, 16-year-old midfielder Eduardo Camavinga the provider, floating in a cross to the back post which was headed home by Romain Del Castillo, an accomplished finish from the 23-year old.
M'Baye Niang had an opportunity to put the contest beyond doubt, getting the better of Marquinhos. However, Areola was on hand to deny the Rennes striker with an instinctive save.
Whilst Rennes defender Jérémy Morel spurned a perfect chance to make it 3-1 as he guided Benjamin Bourigeaud’s corner off the post with Areola well beaten.
PSG pushed to get back into the tie, Kylian Mbpape came inches from levelling the scores with ten minutes left. A clipped strike from outside the box was pushed over the crossbar by Romain Salin. Despite pushing for a winner, Rennes held on to secure a famous win over the Parisians.
