Shiffrin's busy Christmas programme reaps reward
It was giant slalom glory for Mikaela Shiffrin on Tuesday as she benefited from a busy Christmas training schedule in Semmering.
Mikaela Shiffrin's efforts over Christmas paid off as the American extended her lead at the top of the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup overall standings on Tuesday with only the second giant slalom win of her career.
Slalom specialist Shiffrin finished 0.78 seconds ahead of Tessa Worley - the standings leader in the giant slalom discipline - in Semmering on Tuesday, with Italy's Manuela Moelgg third.
Shiffrin now holds a 55-point lead over Lara Gut, who finished fourth, in the race for overall World Cup glory.
And the 21-year-old believes she benefited from training alongside Moelgg over the festive period.
"It's so cool. She [Moelgg] and her family were so inviting for Christmas. It made it feel more like home for us," said Shiffrin. "We really only had Christmas Day off."
Anna Veith failed to qualify for the second run on her return from 14 months out with injury.
Meanwhile, Norway's Kjetil Jansrud maintained his unbeaten record in super-G races this season, claiming his third win in succession at Tuesday's rescheduled event in Santa Caterina.
Jansrud was 0.60 seconds faster than nearest rival Hannes Reichelt in a race that was originally due to take place in Lake Louise, with Dominik Paris taking third (+0.65secs).
"I'm feeling awesome," said Jansrud. "I'm just enjoying the flow for the moment and, hopefully, it will continue."
