Senegal
Senegal has a great crop of top class players, but for various reasons, they make very few international appearances. This year at New Zealand 2015, they will rely on the youth team to establish their reputation.
The Senegalese Football Federation
The Senegalese Football Federation was founded in 1960, affiliated to FIFA in 1964 and to CAF in 1963.
The Road to New Zealand
Senegal make their appearance at New Zealand 2015, after finishing the CAF African U-20 as runners-up, behind title holders Nigeria.
Senegal's campaign at the 19th CAF African U-20 championship was like a roller coaster ride. The hosts lost the competition's opening match against Nigeria and then gave away a last-gasp equalizer against Côte d'Ivoire. They beat Congo in a stunning reversal to secure an unexpected place in the semi-final.
The team beat Mali in the round of the last four, before ending the competition with a defeat against Nigeria 1-0. However, they were able to qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
FIFA U-20 World Cup record
Although Senegal boasts a strong footballing identity in the Dark Continent, and a crop of talented players, the Lions of Teranga have yet to make a FIFA U-20 World Cup appearance, for being continually unsuccessful in reaching the U-20 African Championship’s semi-finals.
This is the first time Senegal are participating at the FIFA U-20 World Cup. The Senegalese hope they can establish their presence in the international tournament, since they have made their first and thus far FIFA World Cup appearance in 2002, when they took the world by surprise by reaching the quarter-finals.
The Coach

Joseph Koto, aged 55, was head coach of the senior Senegalese national team between July 2012 and October 2012. During the same period, he was also the manager of the Olympics team, which he led to the London Olympics in 2012. His men reached the quarter-finals before going out after suffering defeat to champions Mexico, in a penalty shoutout.
