Exclusive Interview with Arsene Wenger
How significant was the win over United at the weekend?
It was significant on two fronts. First of all, we had a very disappointing result three days before against Olympiacos and of course that was a huge shock and secondly it was for us an opportunity to get two points behind the leader, level with Manchester United, to beat them, and on top of that, the third, in recent years we have not beaten United in Championship so on three fronts it was a vital win for us .
Now you have two games against Bayern Munich. How do you expect your team to win against the German giants?
You mean how to beat the unbeatable? First of all, by doing exactly what we have done against Manchester United, playing at a huge pace and by playing with the same belief and by not letting them dictate the game because Bayern likes to have the ball, they like to get you back and so we have to win the ball well and be very well-organised and to use our opportunities to go forward with the maximum pace.
What do you think about Brendan Rodgers’ sacking?
I’m surprised because first of all for me it’s very sad. I think when you lose your job in life, we all have jobs, it’s difficult you know, and on top of that after eight games it’s very, very difficult because if you start well and you have a bad moment during the season, people forgive you but if you start wrong straight away you are questioned and that’s what happened to Brendan Rodgers. Let’s not forget Liverpool has not won the championship since 1991. They won 18 championships and since 91 they have not won the championship, came the closest to winning it 2 years ago and now I don’t know why really, the rational reasons why they have made that decision so quickly. It’s difficult for me to understand.
